20th National Senior & Junior Judo Championships start from Sunday
PESHAWAR, June 26 (APP): The 20th edition of the National Senior and Junior Judo Championship will be commencing from today (Sunday) at Government College Abbottabad, Secretary Organizing Committee Major Zulfiqar told APP on Friday.
He said that Pakistan Wapda would defend the title. Besides the defending Champion teams from Pakistan Army, Pakistan Railways, Pakistan Police, Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Islamabad, FATA and host NWFP would take part. There will be three categories for the juniors like -40kg, -44kg, and -48kg for the juniors and nine different weight categories for the seniors. The overall weight categories in the Championship comprising -40kg, -44kg, -48kg for the juniors and -50kg, -56kg, -60kg, -66kg, -73kg, -81kg, -90kg, -100kg, +100kg and open weight category, Major Zulfiqar added. He said all arrangement have been completed while the teams have already been arrived. The overall contests would be started late night while the opening ceremony will be organized on Sunday.
It is for the first time that we are organizing both Senior and Juniors Championships at one venue and in the same time in order to provide opportunity to the upcoming talent to see top players in action during the senior battle besides their competition in three different weights, Major Zulfiqar added. The slogan of the Championship this year is “Games for Peace”. He said Pakistan Wapda is defending the title from the last three consecutive years. He disclosed that during the Championship players would be short-listed for the Islamic Games-2009 in Iran and South Asian Games-2010 in Bangladesh besides a team out of the short-listed probables would also be selected for the first Asian Martial Arts Games in Thailand, Bangkok.
Along side the Championships, the meeting of the executive council of the Pakistan Judo Federation will be held on June 27 at 11.30 a.m in which secretary of the federation Masood Ahmad would present reports of different events, its planning and performance of the players.
